Nike Clearance Store supports the Back 2 School Giveaway, a program initiated in 2015 by Council member Lee Thomas and organized by Davis Street Family Resource  Center. The program provides new shoes and back to school backpacks for homeless and low-income children in San Leandro in preparation of the upcoming school year.

Today, August 5th, the Nike Clearance Store at Marina Square Center opened its doors two hours early to allow homeless and low-income families to shop for a brand new pair of shoes.  Accompanied by a Davis Street staff or volunteer with a $60 gift card, families were allowed to purchase a pair of shoes for each child.  In addition to helping children and families, Nike and Davis Street staff provided healthy snacks and water to attendees.  Nike even set up games with prizes for entertainment!

As the school year approaches, many children in our own community find themselves without a new pair of shoes to start the school year.  The support of Nike and Councilmember Thomas is important to ensuring that a kid goes back to school in style.

This year, Davis Street will give out backpacks to 330 kids and shoes to 250 kids.  For over 15 years, The Backpack Giveaway, has helped relieve low-income and homeless families of the burden of purchasing school supplies. Children of all grades will receive a backpack filled with pencils, pens, colored pencils, crayons, highlighters, erasers, wide ruled and collage paper, notebooks, note cards, markers, folders, glue sticks, and scissors.
