Stepping Stones was founded in 1975 by concerned parents of children with special needs in San Leandro. What first began as an after school program to provide reinforcement and enhancement of social, vocational and living skills has evolved into an program that provides a continuum of services to more than 250 adults with a developmental disability. Stepping Stones joined Davis Street in February of 2019, with several of the programs operating out of the Davis Street Community Center location on Teagarden in San Leandro.

Programs Include:

Artful Steps – teaching individuals, of every level of ability, methods for self-expression through the visual arts. The program promotes the talent of our artists through community-based events and local art exhibits.

Steps Toward Wellness – The purpose of this programs is to enhance the quality of life by introducing the consumers to information and activities which will lead to healthier life styles.

Hire Steps – a prevocational/remedial program designed for individuals who have not been previously employed or who have a desire to work but are unsure of what it takes to become a successful employee. Hire Steps follows a curriculum outlining the steps to become successful in the workplace with a focus on overcoming a variety of barriers to employment.

Independent Living Services – a program for those consumers who desire to live in their own housing, or are already living in their own housing and need ongoing assistance.  The program offers training in areas deemed necessary for the individual, such as: cooking, money management, self-advocacy, communication, emergency procedures, laundry, shopping, and use of public transportation. In addition, the consumer will be assisted in applying for Section 8 housing as well as searching for an apartment.
