Angela Ramirez, client of Davis Street’s Children’s Services, Primary Care Clinic, and Basic Needs Services: The main challenge that I’ve faced during the pandemic is being able to go to work and make sure that my daughter is somewhere where she’s safe. So I was so happy when I found out that I was still able to have care for my daughter, even though everywhere else was closed down — school, everywhere.

Nico West, client of Davis Street’s Behavioral Health Services, and Pediatric Services: I’ve faced challenges from COVID-19. When I went to school, I thought everything was fine, but then I found out I had to go into shelter in place. Just all my mood just went down because I had to go to school, but instead it was inside of a computer. When quarantine was bad, I could still come here and do stuff because not a lot of people were letting their kids go outside, go to a basketball court with their friends. But basically, friends were the staff from here.

Lucila Polanco, client of Davis Street’s Basic Needs Services: Everyone was very nice, the staff. Crystal Gonzalez has been helping me the most. She’s wonderful. The obstacles that I’ve been through are more like not having enough food. Our income wouldn’t be enough for purchasing certain things, and our family’s having to pay rent.

Angela Ramirez: This service is really necessary because they’re really helping people. I’m just one person, and they have done so much for me. I could only imagine for the other single parents or the other families that’s trying to do stuff and try to get ahead. Davis Street really helped me grow.

Lucila Polanco: When my mother used to… I was 15 years old. She’s a single mom, and she didn’t have anyone else to help her out. She used to come and get food. Her friend was the one that brought her and signed her up for everything. It was nice to see that my mom could get help. She was always like, “Oh, yeah, I got this from Davis.” And that name stuck with me. Now that I’m older, I can see that it was way more than just food. I’m going to start crying if you bring back the past some more.

Interviewer: We don’t have to. Don’t cry.

Lucila Polanco: It was hard. It was really hard to see my mom struggling, and then when she would bring stuff for me, she was always like, “Oh, I brought you this,” and it was nice.

Parent/Guardian: We were almost unable to find a doctor for him, just a pediatrician. We couldn’t find any counseling for him. It was difficult. I had to go through books, make 40 phone calls. And finally, we were referred here. It was so nice to be able to find a doctor and the services that he needed, and in one place.

Lucila Polanco: It seems like a lot of people don’t know where to turn to. If it could be more visible to everyone, it would benefit a lot if everybody knew about it. Yeah. I would recommend it, yeah.

Angela Ramirez: Davis Street gives me peace of mind, and I’m very, very happy for that. And also going back to school. Earlier, I mentioned about growing and Davis Street helped me grow because I went back to school. I’m in the healthcare field, and there’s so many things you could do under the umbrella for healthcare. But I wasn’t going anywhere. I couldn’t do anything because I didn’t have any help.

Angela Ramirez: I can’t imagine if the services were no longer available. I can’t imagine if it’s not there. Oh my goodness. It helped me so much.

Lucila Polanco: When you feel that no one is around, that’s when you start feeling like, who are you going to turn to? Not having too many family members that can come in and step in and help the family out makes you feel that there is someone out there, and it’s family-like and always caring and there for you. That’s what Davis Street seems to me like. I really, really appreciate what they’re doing, and I’m pretty sure other families appreciate it, too.
