Davis Street's Wellness Program Returns to In-Person
We’re thrilled to share some wonderful news with you – our Davis Street Wellness Program is making a triumphant return in person, and it’s getting a new home! After taking our program online during the pandemic, we’re excited to reignite this important initiative that promotes well-being and inclusivity within our community in person.
Our Wellness Program is now at a brand-new location. This fresh beginning allows us to create an even more enriching and supportive environment for everyone involved. We’re dedicated to providing a space where our disabilities programs consumers can focus on their wellness, growth, and overall happiness.
We kicked things off on August 31 with an event that brought staff, consumers, and community members together. It was a day of celebration and learning, as we introduced our new location and unveiled the exciting plans we have in store for the Wellness Program. Here are some snapshots from the event that captured the energy and enthusiasm.
The kickoff event was a beautiful reminder of the strength that comes from community. Our staff, participants, and supporters came together to learn, share, and celebrate this new chapter in the Wellness Program’s journey. The sense of togetherness was palpable, and we’re excited to see this camaraderie continue to blossom in the weeks and months ahead.
Janice Granby, our disabilities program director, shared her thoughts on the program’s revival: “One of our consumers remarked during the kickoff that having the classes during COVID saved their lives. That is a powerful statement of the impact we make without realizing it. We are committed to service and have no idea what weight it may carry with an individual,”
As we move forward with renewed enthusiasm and dedication, we invite you all to join us on this exciting journey of wellness, growth, and support.

Davis Street Health Fair and Backpack Giveaway!
Another Amazing Year of Back to School Fun
We’re thrilled to share the exciting news about the 9th Annual Health Fair hosted by Davis Street Community Center on August 12th, 2023. The event was an incredible success, with over 1,200 attendees joining in the festivities. We were overjoyed to see so many smiling faces, and we wanted to give you all a glimpse of the wonderful day we had!
Backpacks, Shoes, and Bicycles, Oh My!
One of the highlights of the day was the distribution of 500 backpacks filled with school supplies and snazzy Nike shoes for the kids. We believe that every child should start their school year off on the right foot, and thanks to your support, we were able to make this happen. But the excitement didn’t stop there! Thanks to a generous anonymous donor, we held a raffle and gave away three brand-new bicycles to some very lucky winners.
A World of Resources in One Place
The Health Fair wasn’t just about backpacks and bicycles—it was a hub of information and support for everyone in the community. More than 30 community resource booths were set up, offering a wealth of information on services available to you. From health services and education programs to organizations focused on making our community stronger, we had it all covered.
A Special Thank You
We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made this event possible. Alameda County Fire Local 55 provided delicious lunches to keep us fueled, and the participation of various organizations, like the Alameda County Fire Department, Alzheimer’s Association, and many more, truly showcased the power of unity within our community.
A Message from Our CEO
“Thank you to our community for the amazing turnout today of over 1,200 individuals who joined us,” says Rose Padilla Johnson, our incredible CEO. “It was so exciting to see the joy in the three children who won new bikes as well as the 500 students who received backpacks filled with school supplies and brand new Nike shoes. We are so proud of the work we do to support our community.”
Looking to the Future
As we celebrate the success of this year’s Health Fair, we’re eagerly looking ahead to more opportunities to connect, support, and uplift our community. Davis Street remains committed to being a pillar of essential services and a source of strength for all of us.
A Letter from our CEO: Rose Padilla Johnson
Ever the Optimist... the Pandemic is in the Rearview Mirror
For the first time since March-April 2020, it feels as if The Covid-19 Pandemic is truly in the rearview mirror. I am feeling hopeful and excited about the future for Davis Street.
While we continue to see more families-in-need than we did before the Pandemic, I believe this may be the “new normal” for the Bay Area. The cost of living, here, is such that it requires families with lower incomes to routinely seek out support to get through the month. Before the Pandemic, a family may have had a car break down, or an illness/injury that caused mom or dad to miss work. In those rare months, a family would need help from our Food Pantry, for example. Today, this family may need help more often because their monthly earnings are not enough to sustain a family in the San Francisco Bay Area.
What’s behind my sense of my hopefulness? It is the fact that Davis Street is up for the challenge of meeting the increased needs of our community. I do not deny that the Pandemic was difficult for us, organizationally. The day after the Shelter-In-Place order was instituted, only 12 employees showed up for work. It really was frightening. But today – our Dental Clinic has expanded to accommodate an increased need and our Food Pantry is able to serve all of the families that come to us on a weekly basis. Also, the number of individual donors has increased significantly. Those who can help, do help – and they help multiple times during the year, when necessary.
In my 32 years at the helm of Davis Street, I’ve always known that the community cares about our organization. Our Annual Fundraising Gala was completely sold out. This level of support means so much to me. To have built an organization that exists only to help anyone who is in need is one of the greatest achievements of my life.
I want to thank all of our supporters who turned out last month for the Gala; and also thank those who could not attend. Were it not for all of you, Davis Street could not be the hub of love and support that it is today.
Again, I am so hopeful and very excited about our Davis Street future, and I know all of you will be with me along the journey.
From my heart to yours,
Rose
